¡Ay Dios Mio!

A headline story on NYT.com is “As Immigrants Gain American Habits, Their Health Suffers“:

A growing body of research has shown that the longer immigrants live in America, the worse their rates of heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes.

I sure hope the Gang of Eight address this in their Comprehensive Immigration Reform™.

Hmmm… perhaps the causal implication (and latent narrative of Fat Americans & Food Deserts enveloping those poor vibrant Mexicans) is a bit off? For example, hispanics have a much higher rate of diabetes than whites (or, for that matter, “Americans” as a whole), so I guess said immigrants aren’t so much “gaining American habits” as they are creating their own unparalleled habits.
