The La’s – The La’s (1990)

I was completely blown away when this album came out in 1990. It’s long been on my ‘Top 10 Desert Island Discs’ list and, to the wider arena of musical appreciation, the album has stood the test of time.

Often considered the best Britpop album of all time, The La’s eponymously titled album (their only official album release) is simply a masterpiece. The album’s organic running order is the work of the great British producer Steve Lillywhite, who accomplished similar magic with XTC’s Black Sea and Drums and Wires; U2’s Boy, October, and War; and Beady Eye’s criminally underrated Different Gear, Still Speeding.

Singer and songwriter Lee Mavers is a case study in unrealized potential, although many A-list musicians (including the Gallagher Brothers) worship him.

Do yourself a favor and listen to this album. It’s only 35 minutes long.
