George Hawley: Making Sense of the Alt-Right

Greg Johnson has a review of George Hawley’s much-anticipated new book Making Sense of the Alt-Right. Hawley is an assistant professor of political science at the University of Alabama, and no fan of the Alt Right per se, but his recent books have been penetrating and fairly objective attempts to understand today’s dissident right and its paleoconservative intellectual forebears:

In his Conclusion, Hawley deals with the future of the Alt Right. He discusses the threats of deplatforming and doxing, arguing that short of a total shutdown of the Internet, the Alt Right will be able to propagate its message. Doxing, furthermore, is ultimately self-defeating, because it turns people from secret, part-time activists to open, full-time activists — although it does intimidate many people from getting involved. Thus Hawley is confident that the Alt Right will remain an online presence.

But he is quite blunt that there is a big difference between being an online nuisance and having real political power. To actually change political policy, the Alt Right will have to attain “a level of seriousness and organization it has not yet displayed” (p. 172). Although Hawley expresses some hope for the Alt Right corporation, his book was obviously sent to press before its failure became obvious. It is now clear that the tendency of the Alt Right since Trump’s election has been toward self-marginalization, Right-wing sectarianism, and purity spiraling. But even if the Alt Right remains marginal, Hawley recognizes that as the conservative movement continues to decline and the charge of racism loses its sting, “zero-sum identity politics may become the norm, and the Alt-Right will be on the periphery, pushing racial polarization at every available opportunity” (p. 175).

The Target on Gab’s Back

Gab, one of the first forays of Alt-Tech (or Tech 2.0) is under attack from the SJW-Fueled-I.T.-Company industry:

The social media service Gab, which bills itself as Twitter for the alt-right, is on the verge of being booted from the internet.

Andrew Torba, CEO of the company, posted on Monday that “Gab’s domain registrar has given us 5 days to transfer our domain or they will seize it.”

The domain registrar Gab hosts its site with, Asia Registry, told the social media site in an email that it prohibits “use of a domain name for unlawful purposes.” It claims that Gab violates Australian anti-discrimination laws, according to an email that Gab posted on Twitter. Though Gab is based in the U.S., Asia Registry based in Australia…

Torba said that he was hopeful Gab would be able to continue running through https://www.nearlyfreespeech.net/ as a “safe haven.”…

Gab pushing from Asia Registry comes on the heels of the social media company filing an antitrust lawsuit against Google.

Prior to the suit, Google had suspended Gab from its Google Play app store in August. Google said it removed Gab because of its insufficient “level of moderation, including for content that encourages violence and advocates hate against groups of people.”

This will be a long, hard slog.

Pelosi Deplatformed

In terms of causative factors in whites fleeing the Democratic Party —

The more there are BLM protests, like this past Friday in St. Louis, the better.

The more there are SWJ-fueled statue jihads, the better.

And the more that this sort of thing happens, part of the wider cannibalization taking place in the Democratic Party, the better:

A protest erupted on Monday at a press conference held by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) in San Francisco, according to local reports.

Pelosi was holding the conference with fellow California Democratic Reps. Barbara Lee and Jared Huffman to call for the passage of the DREAM Act, which would allow recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program and other undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as minors to remain in the country.

The protesters who interrupted the conference were calling for a “clean” DREAM Act — one that didn’t make concessions to Republicans on border security.

Illegal aliens dictating to the Democratic party what government policy should be… And not a single white Democrat will protest, for obvious reasons.

At one point, some of the protesters called Pelosi a “liar,” NBC News reported.

Some of the protesters held signs reading “Democrats are Deporters,” according to CBS’s San Francisco affiliate.

Pelosi tried to take back control of the event, telling protesters, “You’ve had your say, and it’s beautiful music to our ears,” CBS reported.

But the interruptions continued, and Pelosi was forced to leave.

The Politics of Nonassimilation

The Politics of Nonassimilation: The American Jewish Left in the Twentieth Century is a new book by David Verbeeten, who holds a PhD in politics and international studies from the University of Cambridge. The book’s description:

Over the course of the twentieth century, Eastern European Jews in the United States developed a left-wing political tradition. Their political preferences went against a fairly broad correlation between upward mobility and increased conservatism or Republican partisanship. Many scholars have sought to explain this phenomenon by invoking antisemitism, an early working-class experience, or a desire to integrate into a universal social order. In this original study, David Verbeeten instead focuses on the ways in which left-wing ideologies and movements helped to mediate and preserve Jewish identity in the context of modern tendencies toward bourgeois assimilation and ethnic dissolution.

Verbeeten pursues this line of inquiry through case studies that highlight the political activities and aspirations of three “generations” of American Jews. The life of Alexander Bittelman provides a lens to examine the first generation. Born in Ukraine in 1892, Bittelman moved to New York City in 1912 and went on to become a founder of the American Communist Party after World War I. Verbeeten explores the second generation by way of the American Jewish Congress, which came together in 1918 and launched significant campaigns against discrimination within civil society before, during, and especially after World War II. Finally, he considers the third generation in relation to the activist group New Jewish Agenda, which operated from 1980 to 1992 and was known for its advocacy of progressive causes and its criticism of particular Israeli governments and policies. By focusing on individuals and organizations that have not previously been subjects of extensive investigation, Verbeeten contributes original research to the fields of American, Jewish, intellectual, and radical history. His insightful study will appeal to specialists and general readers interested in those areas.

The Long Game

One has to hope that moves like this are exacerbating a crisis to the system, Cloward-Piven style, otherwise it can only be read as a sign that the P.C. Left is winning (at a minimum, in the short term). From FNC:

The University of Virginia is removing Confederate plaques from its Rotunda, strengthening its ban on open flames and giving funds from an old KKK pledge to the Charlottesville violence victims as it grapples with the Aug. 11 white nationalist rally on its campus.

The school’s student council signed on to a list of demands from a diverse group of students — including the recruitment of more African-American students and faculty, mandatory courses about white supremacy and the addition of plaques to add context to existing Civil War statues — following the protests in Charlottesville that resulted in the killing of Heather Heyer, a counter-protester.

First they came for open flames, then they came for light itself.

A Swede, a Muslim, and a Trannie Walk Into a Bar…

In the past couple of years, Muslim ‘refugees’ have brought their vibrantly diverse penchant for groping infidel women to places like Cologne and music festivals in Sweden. As a result, one Swedish music festival has decided to ban men from attending. But this is running into a snafu:

Organizers behind Sweden’s Statement Festival, which bills itself as “man-free” in response to sexual assaults at previous music festivals, are facing questions over how they will enforce their policy….

However, the festival has recently come under fire on Instagram from people who feel the new policy discriminates against the transgender community.

The ban on men, it turns out, only applies to what Knyckare described as “cisgender men”—which is a term for men whose gender identity corresponds to their sex assigned at birth.

One user wondered if the event’s ban would extend to transgender men, who identify as men but were assigned female at birth, while the Telegraph reports that another wrote:

“You have previously argued that transgender men know how it is to be vulnerable and oppressed, just like women, and should therefore be welcomed. What do you do with the rest of the men who are vulnerable and oppressed, then?”

The festival replied to the users saying they will discuss the issue during an upcoming meeting to see if their decision should be reconsidered.

In the neo-Weimar West, these are the head-scratching dilemmas we face in 2017.

Facebook Hires 3,000 to Monitor ‘Hate Speech’

Yet another reason to quit FB, as if you needed one:

Social media giant Facebook is increasing its crackdown on what it perceives as hateful content. The company is hiring an additional 3,000 content reviewers to monitor the site, according to the New York Post.

“There is absolutely no place on Facebook for hate speech or content that promotes violence or terrorism,” Senior Vice-President for Global Marketing Solutions Carolyn Everson said, announcing the decision.

“As soon as we determine that content has breached our community standards, we remove it…”
