Kevin Williamson’s pompous NR piece titled “Father-Fuhrer” (take a wild guess who the article was about) has rightly found legs amongst the Alt-Right commentariat, as Williamson’s smug cuckservatism perfectly embodies just how wide the gap is between GOP Inc elites and Middle America. (I previously wrote about Williamson’s piece here.)
Williamson profiled Garbutt, NY, one of the real life incarnations of Charles Murray’s ‘Fishtowns’, a downscale, white, working class community experiencing all the things accompanying decades-long economic devastation. Williamson’s piece characterizes the town as a white trash haven of welfare, social security disability fraud, and heroin addiction, and concludes with this oft-cited paragraph, one he ought to be held accountable for the rest of his life:
The truth about these dysfunctional, downscale communities is that they deserve to die. Economically, they are negative assets. Morally, they are indefensible. Forget all your cheap theatrical Bruce Springsteen crap. Forget your sanctimony about struggling Rust Belt factory towns and your conspiracy theories about the wily Orientals stealing our jobs. Forget your goddamned gypsum, and, if he has a problem with that, forget Ed Burke, too. The white American underclass is in thrall to a vicious, selfish culture whose main products are misery and used heroin needles. Donald Trump’s speeches make them feel good. So does OxyContin. What they need isn’t analgesics, literal or political. They need real opportunity, which means that they need real change, which means that they need U-Haul.
On FNC, there is a show called The Americans which is hosted by Charlie LeDuff. I haven’t watched LeDuff’s show before, but if below is representative, it’s a show worth checking out. At a minimum, it represents hope that more Alt-Right-friendly perspectives might be allowed on MSM outlets.
In this snippet, LeDuff goes to the Garbutt, NY to compare what he finds there with the allusions of Williamson’s article. (Hat tip: Occidental Dissent.)
