Page & Plant – The Rain Song (1994)

Back in 1994, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant recorded No Quarter: Jimmy Page and Robert Plant Unledded, which was recorded in front of live audiences, with the London Metropolitan Orchestra in tow (but, strangely, John Paul Jones wasn’t even told about the reunion.)

Here is a wonderful performance of the acoustic ballad “The Rain Song”. It is so fun to watch Page play the song’s gorgeous and intricate chords, his guitar tuned to D, G, C, G, C, D [low to high], which is apparently a ‘Gsus4 tuning’. A fun fact about the song from an interview with Page:

George [Harrison] was talking to Bonzo [John Bonham] one evening and said, ‘The problem with you guys is that you never do ballads.’ I said, ‘I’ll give him a ballad,’ and I wrote ‘Rain Song,’ which appears on Houses of the Holy. In fact, you’ll notice I even quote ‘Something’ in the song’s first two chords.
