Turkish Drivers

When you’ve got ‘Estate of John Lennon’ levels of resources, perhaps you should employ proven Anglophile drivers:

BERLIN (AP) — German police recovered around 100 items that belonged to late Beatles star John Lennon that were stolen from his widow in New York, including three diaries, two pairs of his signature metal-rimmed glasses, a cigarette case and a handwritten music score…

German authorities first became aware of the items, stolen from Yoko Ono at her New York home in 2006, when a bankruptcy administrator for the Berlin auction house Auctionata contacted them in July. The administrator had found the memorabilia in the company’s storage.

Police confiscated the items from the auctioneers two weeks later, and on Monday arrested a suspect and raided his Berlin home and cars. They said another suspect, who is living in Turkey, is currently “not available,” but they would try to get him extradited to Germany.

During their investigation, police officers and prosecutors also flew to New York, where they met Ono to have her verify the stolen goods’ authenticity.

“She was very emotional and we noticed clearly how much these things mean to her and how happy she would be to have them back,” prosecutor Susann Wettley said of the moment they showed Ono some of the recovered items and pictures of some others.

Wettley said that Ono’s former driver, who is now living in Turkey, is one of the suspects. He has a previous conviction in New York related to the stolen items, she said.

The other suspect, who was arrested in Berlin on Monday, was identified as a 58-year-old German businessman of Turkish origin. During the search of his car, police said they found additional belongings of Lennon in a briefcase hidden under the spare tire in the trunk. Neither suspect’s name was released because of German privacy rules.

NYT: Another Alt-Right Profile

Another weekend, another giant NYT profile of an Alt-Righter (this time: Tony Hovater), always carefully edited to depict the individual as barely literate and irrational.

A slight difference this time: There’s a Twitstorm of lefties complaining that the profile only serves to ‘normalize’ the dastardly Nazi.

In addition to the Editors weighing in to respond to the original piece’s negative feedback (for the aforementioned ‘normalizing’ of dastardly Nazis), the NYT reporter has also penned “I Interviewed a White Nationalist and Fascist. What Was I Left With?”, which includes this awesomely loaded passage:

Where was his Rosebud?

After I had filed an early version of the article, an editor at The Times told me he felt like the question had not been sufficiently addressed. So I went back to Mr. Hovater in search of answers. I still don’t think I really found them. I could feel the failure even as Mr. Hovater and I spoke on the phone, adding to what had already been hours of face-to-face conversation in and around his hometown New Carlisle, Ohio.

On the phone, Mr. Hovater responded to my question by rattling off names of libertarian academics, making references to sci-fi movies and describing, yet again, his frustration with what he described as the plodding and unjust nature of American democracy…

To me, that question embodies what good journalism should strive for, as well as the limits of the enterprise. Sometimes all we can bring you is the words of the police spokesman, the suspect’s picture from a high school yearbook, the acrid stench of the burned woods.

Sometimes a soul, and its shape, remain obscure to both writer and reader.

The Rosebud reference and the bit about the ‘acrid stench of the burned woods’ made me laugh out loud. (More literary pretensions in NYT profiles).

To the NYT crowd, it is unimaginable that a white person might rationally embrace white identitarianism and then white nationalism.

On Hipster Racism

Hipster racism is one of the latest, and certainly not the last, creative ways in which non-white, Grievance Culture types seek to exert power and authority by marginalizing and humiliating gullible whites. It is, at the heart of the matter, a redefinition of ‘racism’ to become pure, unadulterated, anti-white animus. In the near future, there will be other, more imaginative, faux-specific forms of ‘racism’ that will make yesteryear’s phantom notions of ‘institutional racism’ seem like phlogiston. But for now one has hipster racism.

In The Guardian, one Arwa Mahdawi asks “Is Lena Dunham’s ‘hipster racism’ just old-fashioned prejudice?” Without going into the torturous details of the Lena Dunham-related incident, Mahdawi gives us the term’s origins:

In a statement which went viral, the writer Zinzi Clemmons talked about how, as a student at Brown University, she’d known a lot of people who’d moved in the same circles as friends of Dunham. Wealthy, well-educated liberals, with parents who were influential in the art world.

“Back in college, I avoided these people like the plague because of their well-known racism,” Clemmons wrote. “I’d call their strain ‘hipster racism’.”

It is hard to imagine anyone more insufferable than a mixed race, affirmative-action, non-white… at Brown University… complaining about white progressive types… at Brown University.

You may have heard the term before. It’s been around for over a decade and seems to have been popularized by an article by Carmen Van Kerckhove in Racialicious. The article noted that hipster racism is “a trend we noticed back in 2005, at the height of the Kill Whitey parties”. In case they mercifully passed you by, they were ironic dance parties in Williamsburg, a then rapidly gentrifying part of Brooklyn, at which white hipsters parodied black hip-hop culture in order to “kill the whiteness inside”.

The Kill Whitey parties are no longer a thing. The same can not be said of hipster racism – it is deeply embedded in popular culture.

I had never heard of Kill Whitey parties, but then again I’m sure there are even more extreme forms of prostration before the Hip Hop Godz of pop culture taking place today, that I’ll learn about in a few years.

Cue the progressive ‘with it’ academic to flesh out the ‘context’ and provide us with some examples:

But what is this hipsterised racism, and how would we recognise it? Rachel Dubrofsky, a communications expert at the University of South Florida, told the Guardian that hipster racism is the “domain of white, often progressive people who think they are hip to racism, which they mistakenly believe gives them permission to say and do racist things without actually being racist”.

“Some of the most popular white women comedians are terrible hipster racists,” Dubrofsky says. In August, for example, Tina Fey appeared on Saturday Night Live to talk about white nationalists marching on Charlottesville – which she did while making a joke about Thomas Jefferson raping his 14-year-old slave, Sally Hemings, calling her “that hot, light-skinned girl over by the butter churn”. Amy Schumer is known for making jokes like: “I used to date Hispanic guys, but now I prefer consensual.” Sarah Silverman has worn blackface on a number of occasions; she has since said publicly she deeply regrets it.

Given the tsunami of post-Harvey Weinstein career implosions, due to various definitions of ‘sexual assault’, it is only natural that the virus of Political Correctness should next spread itself into career implosions due to expressions of unconscious racism.

Hipster racism doesn’t just present itself in off-colour humour; you can see it in the way certain on-trend types fetishize other races. A mixed-race employee at Vice Media told me, for example, about a white executive in her office who routinely uses people of colour as props to make him seem “cool”. He often tries to banter with her about hip-hop, for example, assuming that she is obviously into hip-hop because she is half-black.

“There was one time,” she recalls, “when he wanted to have a business dinner for cool creative people and the invite list was all brown people. It made us feel like pets.”

Hipster racism is thinking that you can use someone else’s culture as a prop.

In other words:

And then there is the New Moses:

Another pervasive example of hipster racism is the staggering number of white people who don’t seem to understand that there is no ironic way to say the N-word if you are not black. Earlier this month, the author Ta-Nehisi Coates was asked at a panel about whether it was OK for white hip-hop fans to rap along when they hear black rappers use the N-word in songs. As he eloquently explained: no, it’s not.

“When you’re white in this country you’re taught that everything belongs to you,” he said. “You think you have a right to everything.”

What a sad and empty existence it must be for progressive, self-hating whites who dutifully receive instructions on appropriate social behavior from the likes of Ta-Genius Coates.

We then enter the domain of pure unfalsifiability when more SJW academics (is there really any other kind?) pontificate further about how racism permeates the ether:

Hipster racism is a racism that is in denial about its racism. However, that is also true of racism in general. As Ibram X Kendi, a professor at American University in Washington DC, told the Guardian: “The expression of racism is to fundamentally deny its expression.”…

Hipster racism may be a 21st-century term, but progressives inadvertently perpetuating racism while supposedly challenging it has been happening for centuries. In his book, Kendi chronicles the history of “assimilationist ideas – these are ideas that consider themselves to be well-meaning – they reject a biological hierarchy but believe in a cultural or behavioral hierarchy.” Abolitionists, for example, thought slavery was wrong but also believed it had turned black people into brutes and therefore advocated the civilizing of black people.

In the 20th century, the 1965 Moynihan report famously pathologized black families, arguing that the problems many African Americans were facing were down to the instability of their family structures. This idea persists, that broken black families are to blame for racial inequality in America. You can see it, for example, in a 2015 New York Times op-ed about the Baltimore riots in which David Brooks wrote: “The real barriers to mobility are matters of social psychology, the quality of relationships in a home and a neighborhood.”

Such is the SJW’s mind that David Brooks, of all people, is seen as a racist.

“The Extreme Gone Mainstream: Commercialization and Far Right Youth Culture in Germany” by Cynthia Miller-Idriss

As part of the Princeton Studies in Cultural Sociology series, The Extreme Gone Mainstream: Commercialization and Far Right Youth Culture in Germany by Cynthia Miller-Idriss is slated for publication on February 13, 2018. From the Amazon description:

The past decade has witnessed a steady increase in far right politics, social movements, and extremist violence in Europe. Scholars and policymakers have struggled to understand the causes and dynamics that have made the far right so appealing to so many people―in other words, that have made the extreme more mainstream. In this book, Cynthia Miller-Idriss examines how extremist ideologies have entered mainstream German culture through commercialized products and clothing laced with extremist, anti-Semitic, racist, and nationalist coded symbols and references.

Drawing on a unique digital archive of thousands of historical and contemporary images, as well as scores of interviews with young people and their teachers in two German vocational schools with histories of extremist youth presence, Miller-Idriss shows how this commercialization is part of a radical transformation happening today in German far right youth subculture. She describes how these young people have gravitated away from the singular, hard-edged skinhead style in favor of sophisticated and fashionable commercial brands that deploy coded extremist symbols. Virtually indistinguishable in style from other popular clothing, the new brands desensitize far right consumers to extremist ideas and dehumanize victims.

Required reading for anyone concerned about the global resurgence of the far right,The Extreme Gone Mainstream reveals how style and aesthetic representation serve as one gateway into extremist scenes and subcultures by helping to strengthen racist and nationalist identification and by acting as conduits of resistance to mainstream society.

Come springtime, perhaps I’ll order the book through Amazon, in addition to buying some khakis and a white polo shirt.

Everything is Racist

Whether it is enforcement of existing immigration laws or enforcement of existing voter registration laws, venues like the NYT seek to depict said enforcement attempts as ‘racist’.

Malibu’s Most Unwanted

From an LA Times story on the rise of homeless people gravitating to beautiful, sunny Malibu:

Being homeless in Malibu is different.

Chris Smith watches ducks land on the lagoon at sunset from his beach encampment, known to locals as Margaritaville.

Nancy Rosenquist told the City Council of huddling behind a dumpster and listening to Lady Gaga record a song in an adjacent building.

Residents have long been generous to those who live in the city’s 21 miles of canyons, beaches and glittering shopping centers.

For 17 years, religious groups fed homeless people, and the city and private donors put up hundreds of thousands of dollars for social workers to find them housing and services.

But Malibu United Methodist Church — facing pressure from the city — in recent weeks took a U-turn, deciding twice-weekly dinners for homeless people would stop after Thanksgiving. The cutoff came after city officials summoned organizers and suggested they were attracting more homeless people and making the problem worse.

This paragraph is perhaps the best:

The issue boiled over on conservative and Christian online forums, where Malibu residents were castigated as liberal hypocrites. Lurid death threats poured in to City Hall.

Liberal hypocrites, of course. But death threats?  That tells me it’s another instantiation of liberal cannibalization.

Malibu, population 13,000, has roughly 180 homeless residents but no shelter or housing for poor people.

That’s right: the fascists in Malibu don’t have a single unit of subsidized housing.

What, pray tell, has caused this influx of undesirables?

After the Metro’s Expo Line opened to Santa Monica last year, neighbors began complaining of mentally ill and rough-looking characters camping at the beach and hanging out near schools.

“A homeless person was taking a shower in the girls locker room in middle school — that wasn’t real good,” said Gary Peterson, a retired developer and hotelier who quit the church’s board of trustees over the meal issue…

Some homeless people believed residents were reacting against an influx of African Americans from Santa Monica and downtown Los Angeles. Malibu is 90% white.

In that last instance, there should be [1](echo) quotes around the word ‘white’.

The Forward on ‘Operation White’

Over at the Daily Jewish Forward, Sam Kestenbaum waxes neurotic on “How Tucker Carlson Boosted The Latest ‘Alt-Right’ Meme Campaign”:

Earlier this month, Fox News host Tucker Carlson railed against what he said were liberals sowing “racial divisions” throughout America. Carlson riffed off a Washington Post article about a principal at a Maryland high school investigating an incident in which someone posted flyers proclaiming, “It’s Okay To Be White.” Carlson was exasperated. What was so controversial about this?

“Being white, by the way, is not something you can control,” Carlson said. “You shouldn’t attack people for it, and yet the left does constantly — in case you haven’t noticed.”

Somewhere, “alt-right” trolls and meme posters cheered: One of their meme campaigns, conceived in the dark corners of an online chatroom late last month, was making headlines — and being defended on a prominent news network. Carlson’s defense of the “It’s Okay To Be White,” flyer was yet another example of how the “alt-right” creatively disguises and popularizes white nationalist ideology.

While the meme is only about a month old, it follows a certain pattern of slogans and images promulgated by the white nationalist “alt-right.” For example, the white nationalist group Identity Evropa has been ramping up campus outreach efforts by circulating flyers that say, simply, “Only We Can Be Us” or “Become Who You Are.” Other posters in this vein include messages like, “I want you to love who you are” and “Don’t apologize for being white.”…

Of the meme’s origins:

Late last month, posts began circulating on the site 4chan, calling for members to place posters with the slogan “It’s Okay To Be White” in public places as “proof of concept” that a “harmless message” would cause a “massive media sh*tstorm.” Some took to calling it “Operation White.”

The troll operation was launched Halloween night, according to screenshots of a 4chan post, and detailed seven simple steps. The plan? Make “normies realize that leftists & journalists hate white people, so they turn on them.” A hashtag circulated, #IOTBW.

4channers printed out the memes of the slogan and distributed them in public spaces, closely following media reactions. When network news began reporting on the emergence of the flyers, describing them often as white supremacist slogans, the trolls cheered. They had provoked — or “triggered,” in “alt-right” slang — their perceived enemies in the culture war.

Jew vs. Gentile – Pt. 271,413

From a profile of Elizabeth Hardwick by Tobi Haslett in Harper’s:

Better to be striking and severe. Hardwick installed herself boldly among the New York Intellectuals, a largely Jewish group of writers preoccupied by modernism and riveted by politics. The Family, as the group was sometimes called, was a pit of erudite vipers, many of the members lapsed Marxists who snapped into a compulsory anticommunism at the start of the Cold War. The journal Partisan Review provided the perfect stage for their postures and disputes: in its pages Philip Rahv, Irving Howe, Edmund Wilson, Hannah Arendt, and Lionel Trilling sharpened their reputations as critics and polemicists, gong-banging arbiters of literature and the left.

Among them Hardwick was considered a pretty, gentile sophisticate with a taste for le mot juste.

Can A.I. Be Taught to Explain Itself?

Occasionally, the NYT is good for something. Cliff Huang’s “Can A.I. Be Taught to Explain Itself?” is a very well-written and enlightening in-depth piece on the rapidly advancing, applied science field of algorithmic machine-learning. The introduction to the piece hints at the clash between science and Political Correctness, and how the latter continues to stymie progress in the former:

In September, Michal Kosinski published a study that he feared might end his career. The Economist broke the news first, giving it a self-consciously anodyne title: “Advances in A.I. Are Used to Spot Signs of Sexuality.” But the headlines quickly grew more alarmed. By the next day, the Human Rights Campaign and Glaad, formerly known as the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, had labeled Kosinski’s work “dangerous” and “junk science.” (They claimed it had not been peer reviewed, though it had.) In the next week, the tech-news site The Verge had run an article that, while carefully reported, was nonetheless topped with a scorching headline: “The Invention of A.I. ‘Gaydar’ Could Be the Start of Something Much Worse.”…

After getting his Ph.D., Kosinski landed a teaching position at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and soon started looking for new data sets to investigate. One in particular stood out: faces. For decades, psychologists have been leery about associating personality traits with physical characteristics, because of the lasting taint of phrenology and eugenics; studying faces this way was, in essence, a taboo. But to understand what that taboo might reveal when questioned, Kosinski knew he couldn’t rely on a human judgment.

Kosinski first mined 200,000 publicly posted dating profiles, complete with pictures and information ranging from personality to political views. Then he poured that data into an open-source facial-recognition algorithm — a so-called deep neural network, built by researchers at Oxford University — and asked it to find correlations between people’s faces and the information in their profiles. The algorithm failed to turn up much, until, on a lark, Kosinski turned its attention to sexual orientation. The results almost defied belief. In previous research, the best any human had done at guessing sexual orientation from a profile picture was about 60 percent — slightly better than a coin flip. Given five pictures of a man, the deep neural net could predict his sexuality with as much as 91 percent accuracy. For women, that figure was lower but still remarkable: 83 percent.

Much like his earlier work, Kosinski’s findings raised questions about privacy and the potential for discrimination in the digital age, suggesting scenarios in which better programs and data sets might be able to deduce anything from political leanings to criminality. But there was another question at the heart of Kosinski’s paper, a genuine mystery that went almost ignored amid all the media response: How was the computer doing what it did? What was it seeing that humans could not?…
