German ‘Justice’

From AFP (“Ex-Nazi death camp guard, 96, charged with complicity”):

Germany is racing against time to prosecute the last Third Reich criminals to make up for decades of neglect

German prosecutors on Friday charged a 96-year-old former SS guard at a Nazi death camp with complicity in the murder of detainees, in one of the last criminal cases linked to the Holocaust.

The man, who was not named, was 22 years old when he worked at the extermination camp Majdanek in occupied Poland between August 1943 and January 1944.

He was a member of the fifth company of the SS Death’s Head unit, which was regularly deployed as guards and tasked with monitoring and maintaining order at the camp.

“According to available information, the accused, as well as other SS members of the camp, knew about the cruelty of the organised mass killings,” said prosecutors in the western German city of Frankfurt.

“He should have known that the people were killed out of racist and despicable motives,” they added.

The former guard, who now lives in Frankfurt, was in particular allegedly involved in the so-called “Operation Harvest Festival”, in which at least 17,000 Jews were shot in November 1943 in graves that the victims themselves were made to dig.

“He knowingly and willingly contributed to these insidious and cruel acts,” added the prosecutors.

So, Germany is prosecuting a 96 year old man, who as a 22 year old German soldier was stationed at a concentration camp.

Stay classy, German elites!

Batons

After Richard Spencer’s speech in Gainesville, FL yesterday:

Three white men, two of whom have shown “connections to extremist groups,” face charges of attempted homicide following a shooting in Gainesville on Thursday evening.

Spencer had come to the University of Florida for a speaking engagement, and was immediately drowned out by hundreds of protesters inside the Phillips Center and outside the venue. At least two of the men were among the first sympathizers of the alt-right to show up, immediately interviewed by press waiting for the event to begin.

After the event, about 5:30 p.m., the three men – 28-year-old Tyler Tenbrink of Richmond, Texas; 30-year-old William Fears and 28-year-old Colton Fears of Passadena, Texas – drove in a silver Jeep when they approached a group of protesters, according to Gainesville Police.

The protesters were sitting at a bus stop on Southwest Archer Road when the men approached, and one of the passengers yelled “Hail Hitler” and other chants at them. One of the protesters then used a baton to smash the rear window of the vehicle. After the vehicle backed up about ten feet, Tenbrink exited with a handgun and fired, his single shot hitting a building nearby.

The first acts of violence always seem to start with the Left.

How Fascism Sneaks Into Pop Culture

From a leftist article “How Does Fascism Sneak Into Pop Culture?”:

Alexander Reid Ross, a geography instructor at Portland State University and author of the February 2017 book Against the Fascist Creep, explains that, historically, fascists have infiltrated mainstream culture because fascism focuses on the idea of “rebirth both from left- and right-wing ideologies.” In the case of the arts and humanities, fascists have sometimes usurped ostensibly progressive movements, such as Romanticism, and used them to advance their agenda. Fascists have traditionally physically interrupted performance art in order to spread their message as well.

The fascist tradition of using the arts as vehicles for expanding the movement is visible in the U.S. today, in some cases in eerily similar ways to the original rise of European fascism in the early 20th century. In an interview with Pacific Standard, Ross discussed the ways fascists have historically snuck into mainstream cultural milieus, why progressives sometimes fall for fascist infiltrators, and how entertainment media played a role in the election of Trump.

The piece actually cites former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer being allowed to speak at the recent Emmy Awards as an example of ‘creeping fascism’.

Wow.

George Will: “Trump’s Unhealthy Pandering to the Alt-Right”

George Will, the professor emeritus of Cuckoldry, writes on “Trump’s Unhealthy Pandering to the Alt-Right”:

With Trump turning and turning in a widening gyre, his crusade to make America great again is increasingly dominated by people who explicitly repudiate America’s premises. The faux nationalists of the “alt-right” and their fellow travelers like Stephen Bannon have imported the blood-and-soil ethno-tribalism that stains the continental European right. In “Answering the Alt-Right” in National Affairs quarterly, Ramon Lopez, a University of Chicago Ph.D. candidate in political philosophy, demonstrates how Trump’s election has brought back to the ideas that a post-Lincoln America had slowly but determinedly expunged. They were rejected because they are incompatible with an open society that takes its bearing from the Declaration of Independence’s doctrine of natural rights.

With their version of the identity politics practiced by progressives, alt-right theorists hold that the tribalism to which people are prone should not be transcended but celebrated. As Lopez explains, the alt-right sees society as inevitably “a zero-sum contest among competing identity groups.” Hence the alt-right is explicitly an alternative to Lincoln’s affirmation of the Founders’ vision. They saw America as cohesive because of a shared creed. The alt-right must regard Lincoln as not merely mistaken but absurd in describing America as a creedal nation dedicated to a “proposition.” The alt-right insists that real nationhood requires cultural homogeneity rooted in durable ethnic identities. This is the alt-right’s alternative foundation for the nation Lincoln said was founded on the principle that all people are, by nature, equal.

And then Will removed his monocle.

While he drips with hatred towards the Alt-Right, his description above, the distinction he makes, and the choice it presents, is spot on.

Portland Hipster on Palahniuk & Goad

A hipster (and presumably leftie) journalist writing for a progressive weekly in that whitest of hipster utopias, Portlandia, writes on “The Far Right’s Strange Obsession with Portland Author Chuck Palahniuk”.

He also has a very long profile of Jim Goad.

W.E.B. Dubois: Race Realist

W.E.B. Dubois’  “The Conservation of Races” is an essay the Left usually avoids dealing with. Why? Because it contains passages like this:

“The history of the world is the history, not of individuals, but of groups, not of nations, but of races, and he who ignores or seeks to override the race idea in human history ignores and overrides the central thought of all history. What, then, is a race? It is a vast family of human beings, generally of common blood and language, always of common history, traditions and impulses, who are both voluntarily and involuntarily striving together for the accomplishment of certain more or less vividly conceived ideals of life.”

Proposition Nation vs. Blood & Soil

From a speech McCain gave last night:

“To fear the world we have organized and led for three-quarters of a century, to abandon the ideals we have advanced around the globe, to refuse the obligations of international leadership and our duty to remain ‘the last best hope of earth’ for the sake of some half-baked, spurious nationalism cooked up by people who would rather find scapegoats than solve problems is as unpatriotic as an attachment to any other tired dogma of the past that Americans consigned to the ash heap of history,” McCain said in the speech.

The Arizona senator said “we live in a land made of ideals, not blood and soil” and said Americans “are the custodians of those ideals at home, and their champion abroad.”

That’s about as clear a distinction as one can draw between the principles of nationalism and the principles of neoconservative internationalism.

NYT Wants To Hide Their Reporters’ Bias

The NYT scrambles to hide the liberal bias of its reporters, vis-à-vis their social media posts (“The Times Issues Social Media Guidelines for the Newsroom”):

The New York Times announced on Friday an updated and expanded set of guidelines for our journalists’ use of social media.

The new guidelines underscore our newsroom’s appreciation for the important role social media now plays in our journalism, but also call for our journalists to take extra care to avoid expressing partisan opinions or editorializing on issues that The Times is covering.

In the interest of transparency, we’ve included the complete guidelines below, along with an introductory memo sent to the newsroom by Dean Baquet, our executive editor…
