The Mother of All Ad-Hominems

From a USA Today article on a Stomfront conference held this weekend in TN:

“Hello master race!” protester Chris Irwin yelled over a megaphone. “You wanted to keep this a secret, Nazis, and then you did something stupid and you put it in a public park so we could come.”…

“The problem is what they try to plan at these events is hiding the swastikas, hiding the pointy hats. The new KKK is anti-NAFTA and is pro-steelworker and tries to give a populist message,” Irwin said.

So, now being anti-NAFTA and pro-steelworker makes one a neo-Nazi.

In very short order, the Left’s target has moved from Confederate statues to anything and everything that represents whiteness.

Trailer: Isle of Dogs (2018)

The first trailer for Wes Anderson’s upcoming stop-motion film Isle of Dogs is up.

It’s got Wes’ unmistakable and infectious twee flair for the esoteric.

I, personally, can’t wait.

The Opportunity with Patriotic Symbolism

Donald Thoresen has a good post titled “Rally ‘Round the Flag”:

Consider the recent National Football League “KneelGate” protests in which the national anthem figures in the same way as does the flag above. Young black players, Jewish owners, and emasculated whites have been kneeling during the singing of the anthem in protest of . . . something. It is hard to say why exactly they are doing this, but it doesn’t matter even slightly because, whatever the cause, it is doubtless based on spurious reasoning and incorrect data and, more importantly, the larger message is clear: it is a display of anti-whiteness couched in anti-Americanness for the entire country to see. This kind of thing hits average Americans hard because, as people who are accustomed to avoidance (the frontier, white flight, consumerism, etc.), they rely on sensory diversion for comfort. It is safe to say that for many football fans, watching a game might be the only sense of community they get to experience–certainly on the national level. When this bit of recreation becomes politicized and that politicization is racial in nature, an increase in racial awareness occurs, with an increased degree of racial cohesion as the inevitable result. No matter what is said (or not) in public, it escapes no white observer that these spoiled-brat millionaires are blacks who are behaving in typical black fashion. The connection between whiteness and the national anthem is being formed right now in white homes across the country. White Nationalists might not care about the national anthem. We might not care about football. But we do care about angry white people.

The potential to appropriate U.S. symbolism is ripe and probably easier than we think. In the mid-90s, part of the quick success of an incipient Fox News Channel was to drape itself in patriotic colors and graphics, then, post-9/11, for its on-air personalities to unapologetically wear American flag pins, etc.

This distinguished FNC from all other MSM outlets, and successfully exploited the emotional tropes of such symbolism. This also had the wonderful side effect of causing Leftist CNN types (and Obama himself) to reactively and deliberately not wear the American flag pin, unintentionally reinforcing the U.S. flag as a symbol of the ‘Right’.

Flash forward to now, where we are seeing the effective racialization of everything.

Trump’s recent NFL kerfuffle, for example, was a brilliant move in that he successfully corralled BLM-types and their MSM apologists into a corner, coaxing them to take the position that disrespecting the National Anthem is the ‘Right Thing To Do’. It’s tantamount to nudging the Left (and mainstream Dems) into a position of pro-flag-burning.

Think of Trump’s earlier Warsaw speech, where a generic defense of the West was seen by even mainstream liberals like Peter Beinart as coded white supremacism.

This is where we are now. In terms of appropriating American symbols, and tapping into the massive wellspring of meaning and social capital which accompanies them, we have one hell of an opportunity before us.

Dirty Chinese Restaurant

From FNC:

A mobile game developer in Toronto, Ontario, is seeing a wave of backlash after announcing a new app called “Dirty Chinese Restaurant.”

The game, developed by a company called Big-O-Tree Games, tasks players with assuming the role of Wong Fu, a restaurateur who inherited the titular “dirty” establishment from his brother. The objective is to turn the restaurant into a thriving establishment, but players are allowed to run the business as “honest or dishonest” as they desire, and they have the option of killing stray dogs and cats to serve to customers, or running the kitchen like a “sweatshop,” reports the International Business Times

According to Big-O-Tree’s website, however, this kind of controversy may be exactly what they intended. The landing page for Big-O-Tree Games currently features a message reading “being politically correct is so … boring,” and the company also writes that it aims to make “offbeat games we know you want to play, but you didn’t think anyone had the cojones to make!”

Heisenberg vs. Positivism

“The positivists have a simple solution: the world must be divided into that which we can say clearly and the rest, which we had better pass over in silence. But can anyone conceive of a more pointless philosophy, seeing that what we can say clearly amounts to next to nothing? If we omitted all that is unclear, we would probably be left completely uninteresting and trivial tautologies.”

Don’t Open That Door

For writing the column “America’s Jews Are Driving America’s Wars”, Phil Giraldi was fired by the middling cuckish The American Conservative. Giraldi had been writing for TAC for 14 years.

Among my Links on the right, I do have a link to TAC, and will continue to do so, not because I necessarily endorse the view of all of its writers, or its editorial decisions, but because it is an important voice in the larger debate.

Jared Registered to Vote as a Female

I’m not sure what to make of this. A simple error or bureaucratic snafu or some sort of deeper, past, psychological expression by Jared?

Washington (CNN) — Jared Kushner, senior adviser and son-in-law to President Donald Trump, apparently registered to vote as a female, according to his publicly accessible 2009 New York state voter information.

The records held by the New York State Board of Elections show Jared Corey Kushner is registered to vote as a female, Wired first reported.

Firstly, why would anyone think Jared would do something like that? He is a paragon of masculinity.

A440

Here’s an interesting piece on how and why A440 is the standard tuning for Western music:

The sound of an orchestra tuning is instantly recognizable. As soon as you hear it, you know exactly what’s about to happen. But there is a simple reason why a whole lot of tuning orchestras sound awfully alike — they are tuning to the same pitch frequency, an A at 440 hertz* (abbreviated “Hz,” a hertz is the unit by which we measure frequency).

But that makes you wonder — how did they choose that particular pitch? Was there some kind of mega-music conference where the powers that be decided that A440 was to be the tuning standard? Yes. Yes there was. Several, in fact.

The official 440 Hz standard, recognized by orchestras all over the world, was first declared the norm by the International Organization for Standardization in 1955, and they doubled down on that frequency 20 years later. ISO (the initials are derived from the French name of the organization) is dedicated to, as its name suggests, standardizing stuff; it was only a matter of time before they got around to standardizing sound itself. Their decision was based off of the decision to declare  440 Hz right and proper at an early conference — that of a British Standards Institution meeting of 1939. And that frequency was a reaffirmation of yet another conference, this one in Austria in 1885. The frequency decided there? The note A should be tuned to 440 Hz. Your tuning standards are the product of decades of meetings, which is probably the most boring answer you could get for practically any question.
