RIP: Grant Hart

Grant Hart, who with Bob Mould co-founded the great post-punk band Hüsker Dü, has died at the age of 56 after a long battle with cancer. Mould has penned an homage here.

While I greatly preferred Mould’s songs, below are two of Hart’s better songs.

Turn on the News” from Zen Arcade (1984) is quite an influential song, with noted rock critic Robert Christgau calling it best song of 1984, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame putting it on their “500 songs that shaped rock and roll” list.

My personal favorite Hart song with Hüsker Dü is “You Can Live at Home”, the closing song from Husker’s last and greatly underrated studio album, Warehouse: Songs and Stories (1987). The song’s long coda, which starts with Mould’s monster D-A-E chords around the 2:00 mark, could go on forever and I’d never tire of it. Oh, the number of times I’ve listened to this song with the volume cranked to 11.
