When Jews begin acknowledging the simple fact that they have relatively high IQ or relatively superior math skills, is this a baby step for the Overton Window? David Kirsch ruminates on the role Talmudic scholarship may have played in developing Jewish math and logic skills:

In general, I’ve found that different areas of the Talmud demand the exercise of different mental powers. Understanding the law of eruvs requires a geometrical imagination, while the law of permitted marriages requires a good memory for relationships. In Zevachim, what’s needed so far is the ability to parse fine logical distinctions—to take two things and determine how they are similar and how they are different. All of these abilities are related to logic and mathematics, and a rigorous Talmudic education stimulates those faculties—which may explain why so many great mathematicians have been Jewish.

On Michael Brendan Dougherty’s “The Church of Grievance”

In “The Church of Grievance”, Michael Brendan Dougherty distills the sense of transcendence that SJWs long for:

But something is changing in victim politics. It is no longer an emotive call for political reform, or restitution for wrongs done. The young activists whom conservatives call “social-justice warriors” practice politics in a form that looks spiritual, and their Marxoid political theories are effulgent with longings and aspirations that point far beyond what we normally think of as politics.

Dougherty correctly diagnoses things, but what category of discussion is conspicuously absent?

The new dominance of victim politics has exerted a gravitational effect on all of American political discourse. The shift in Marxist rhetoric from the proletariat to the subaltern has foreshadowed shifts in American politics writ large. In the 20th century, Americans often claimed their rights and privileges as members of the middle class, demanding what was owed to “people who work hard and play by the rules.” Many Americans who were a bit poorer or a bit richer than the middle class still politically identified with that great mass of citizens. It was a rhetoric built around the idea that the middle class works to create wealth and deserves its share of it.

Now, Americans group themselves into ever smaller and more-besieged minorities…

Nowhere in his otherwise excellent essay will one find any discussion of whites becoming a minority, how the displacement of whites has led to the multicultural war of all against all we now find ourselves in, and how a rekindling of ‘ethnic pride for white people’ may be the most rational group strategy for whites to organically take.

Instead of each person’s speaking for himself, people now issue political demands “as a member of” this or that community. It’s almost as if each individual finds meaning only insofar as he conforms to an abstracted or imagined political model.

In my own recent readings in sociology of religion, I am struck by the parallels of cult formation with the increasingly theological dynamics of political correctness. PC has entered the realm of worship of pure abstraction, empirical reality be damned. As an operative concept, the status of ‘identity’ (framed only in the ways that Leftists allow) is currently at a stage antecedent to… Pure Being.

Dougherty points to the art world as a representative example of a cultural category that has become completely subsumed by PC’s will to power:

It is also likely that the new victim politics is channeling energy that would otherwise express itself in other projects. The ever-narrowing mission of the art world is a likely culprit. Haunted by the corruption of commercialism and disillusioned with the pursuit of genius for its own sake, almost the entire artistic world has looked to politics to find a new purpose. And so every field, from abstract sculpture to film to stand-up comedy, has started to mimic the hectoring voice and social goals of progressive politics. Those seeking to express or sublimate their deepest longings almost inevitably turn away from contemplation and creation and toward activism. Tragedy and comedy are supposed to offer catharsis and make living in an imperfect world easier. But, given an overtly political role, these forms now essentially withhold that salve; their mission is agitation in the service of social reform. We have an art world that satisfies us less and diverts more dissatisfaction into the political realm.

There are the ritualistic (and creepy) call and response patterns of leftwing rallies, the demonization of anyone and everyone to their right, and the absolute, all-consuming desire to silence (no, make that shut down) all dissent:

Here victim politics recasts disagreement as desecration and defilement. Someone who walks into these environments looking for the intellectual parry and thrust of debate is instead told, “Your job is to listen.” The expectation that no one would dare to interject or question the personal testimony of the victim of oppression is not so different from the expectation of silence during the reading of the Gospel in a church service, or during a homily. Your job is to listen.

And it is here, I would suggest, that the politics of the victim touch something deep in the soul of modern man. They are in some ways the residue of Christian thought and ritual in a Western world that offers little traditional religious education or formation. The premise of victim politics is like a mirror image of devotion to the Suffering Servant…

Putting this Victim at the center of the social order, in ritual or in preaching, begins the redemption of all humanity…

Depending on your disposition, you can take this mimicry of the Christian myth and ritual and its transmutation into politics as either a perverse compliment about the endurance of Christian thought or a kind of demonic parody. Either way, we are not here contending over something exclusively political. Once the explicitly political claims are filtered out, what is left over in victim politics is a churchly way of being in a world that has escaped the bonds of religion. We are contending with a longing for recognition and esteem and for a mission that has a transcendent horizon; no form of human governance can ever satisfy such desires.

Dougherty concludes his piece with another disappointing failure to look at the obvious, growing, counter-cultural trends happening in the Dissident Right, trends which emphasize white identitarianism and a sense of transcendence based on ancestral accomplishments and historical greatness:

And so we must be careful. An anti-PC politics that takes the form of mockery will win converts only among those who are already primed to be disillusioned. Conservatives need to think more holistically. We need a politics freed from the strictures of utilitarianism so that it may admit human passions, in forms other than suffering. The aspirations for transcendence that young people feel so keenly need outlets for expression and cultivation in art and in the devotional life of religion. Young people need to feel that their travails have purpose and meaning beyond the way they might manifest societal dysfunction or be recast as a symbol of political oppression.

Dougherty is correct here to point out the spiritual emptiness and gray utilitarianism of conservatism-as-the-latest-tax-cut, and it would here that one would expect a rational surveyor of the situation to at least acknowledge the counter-trend of white identitarianism, which is an affirmative enterprise, very different from forms of white identity politics where whites play the victim card (although I do not repudiate this latter tactic as a rational short term strategy.)

Instead, we get vapid Dreher-like monotones about a ‘renewed’ civic nationalism:

If we want a politics that is less histrionic, and a society that offers something more empowering than the campus star chamber, what we really need is to re-create our civic, social, and familial life so that people’s disappointments and outrages will be met with compassion and understanding, or channeled into great works of art and humble prayers. No small task, I know.

It never fails to amaze me how NR types like Dougherty simply cannot get themselves to acknowledge where all of this is heading. Having purged all race realists from NR and the like, these CivNat types consigned heretical thinkers like Samuel Francis, John Derbyshire, and Peter Brimelow to the ‘white supremacy’ category.

And so, finding themselves unable to engage with the ideas of those previously ‘respectable’ thinkers (for fear of losing their jobs or standing in polite society), Dougherty et al find themselves with no quarter.

Dreher Getting Closer to the Fire

Like the inexorable push towards mortality, Rod Dreher’s red-pilling inches forward:

The point is to say that the myths that held us together — a common religion, a common history — are badly frayed, and it’s doubtful that they can hold much longer. The darker truth may be that the secular myth of America… may only have been believable in a country where the white tribe dominated — and, in fact, they rationalized their domination by telling themselves that the order they created was just.

King Lear 2018

A black actress is cast as Henry V, so naturally the NYT is ecstatic:

Mr. O’Hara’s most obvious intervention is the casting of the engaging Zenzi Williams, an African-American actress, as Henry, a canny move that makes us ask some useful questions about whom we expect to see leading an army and rocking a crown. Ms. Williams can do both, handily. It’s unclear whether she’s playing the part as male or female. It’s extraneous, too. Gender doesn’t seem to matter to this production.

A ‘canny move’.

The fact that a black woman is playing a historically white King role is “extraneous”.

We’ve got race and gender fluidity covered. Next comes Patriarchical Power!

What does ultimately matter is power — who has it, who wants it, how to wield it. If Ms. Williams’s Henry is an inspiring leader when victory seems anything but assured, the actress transforms into a much more worrying one once Agincourt is won. (What’s that thing about power corrupting? Oh. Right.) The wooing scene, usually played as a sweetly comic cool-down after the heat of battle, isn’t sweet here, as Henry asserts his battle-born authority in violent and abusive ways. Too bad Princess Katharine lived before #BalanceTonPorc got going.

#BalanceTonPorc, by the way, is the French version of #MeToo.

Keep in mind: This isn’t in the NYT’s op-ed pages, it’s in their Theater Review section. But is there really any difference anymore?

Welcome to the club, Turkey:

Yusuf Kaplan, a columnist for the pro-government daily Yeni Safak, said deism was spreading among the children of conservative families, while the children of more secular families were going for the more radical edge: atheism. The underlying reason, according to Kaplan, was the hedonistic, materialistic and degenerate culture coming from the West. Turkey had to stand up to this cultural erosion by further Islamizing its education and media, or else “the imperialists could occupy the country, mentally, from within.”

Starbucks Incident = How Tenuous Safe Spaces Can Be

The LA Times prints a black op-ed about the StarbucKKKs incident, which is apparently right up there with the Rosa Parks incident:

“I admit, I have been lulled into believing that Starbucks is a safe space, too. I’ve camped out with a computer or a book along with others who may stay a half hour or half a day. I haven’t run into resistance, and I’ve committed the sin of forgetting how tenuous safety can be.”

The absence of discrimination isn’t seen as the absence of discrimination, but rather simply a display of “how tenuous safety can be”. This is the phenomenological worldview of political correctness: phantom notions of institutional racism permeate reality; Derridean notions of absence-being-presence are in the ether.

With some, it’s always 1933.

With others, it’s always 1963.

NYT Wants Fewers Johns & Roberts, More Liams & Noahs

The NYT has a strange concern over the name “John” which they deploy in the most bizarre of comparison metrics:

Fewer Republican senators are women than men named John — despite the fact that Johns represent 3.3 percent of the population, while women represent 50.8 percent. Fewer Democratic governors are women than men named John. And fewer women directed the top-grossing 100 films last year than men named Michael and James combined…

The prevalence of men in power with particular names is revealing not only of skewed gender representation, but also of the whiteness of many institutions of American politics, culture and education. White men continue to dominate many categories of leadership in America.

The piece’s final paragraph dovetails nicely with Steve Sailer’s recent Tweetstorm on ‘white privilege’ at the SPLC:

The Glass Ceiling Index could change if more women fill the workplace pipeline — but many of these obstacles have persisted despite the presence of more than enough qualified women to do the jobs. More likely, what will change sooner are the names of the men in charge — fewer Johns and Roberts and more Liams and Noahs.

More Liams (in Hebrew, the name Liam can be spelled two ways with the meaning of “My Nation” or “My People”) and more Noahs (ahem).

NYT: Hindus Don’t Like Muslims (& Vice-Versa)

Only in the suicidal mind of the white Western progressive is there the close and realizable dream of perfect egalitarianism and racial blindness.

Everywhere else in the world, ethnicity and tribal loyalties trump all else.

From today’s NYT is a story titled “Where 8-Year-Old Was Raped and Killed, Hindus Rally Around Suspects”.

A group of Hindu men kidnap, rape and then murder an 8 year old Muslim girl. And in the small village of Rasana, Hindu villagers are rallying around the Hindu murderers:

There seems to be little remorse or sympathy here. Few people in the mostly Hindu village are talking about the inhumanity of the crime or the fact that the girl’s traumatized parents have fled. Barred from burying their daughter near their home, the family had to take her body with them.

Instead, you hear things like: Our land and their land. Us and them.

But, we are assured, when such ethnicities (Hindu or Muslim) immigrate to the U.S. or England, they leave such deeply-rooted, ethnic loyalties behind.

The motive for the crime, investigators say, was nothing less than ethnic cleansing. Investigators said that Sanji Ram, the custodian at the temple, hated the nomads for coming into his area and that he orchestrated the killing to drive them away.

Surely, with sufficient socioeconomic pressure, this sort of barbarism will never take place in the West itself.

Bret Stephens & The Immortal, Unyielding,1933 Meme

To Bret Stephens & his ilk, it’s always 1933. And it is never Muslim immigrants behind the rise of anti-Semitism in Germany:

“There were nearly 1,000 reported anti-Semitic incidents in Berlin alone last year. A neo-fascist party, Alternative for Germany, has 94 seats in the Bundestag.”

With respect to the juxtaposition of those two sentences above, think about what is implied, what is entailed, what is presumed.

Then the real venom comes out:

“Jews cannot rely for their safety on the kindness of strangers, least of all French or German politicians.”

Even after 70 years of endless, post-war, gentile, genuflection (as well as Holocaust museums everywhere one turns) and endless third world immigration designed to dilute any dormant nationalist impulses, it’s always 1933.

Deep down inside is hatred for the host country’s goyim.

Hence the ‘importance’ of Israel:

“For Jews, it’s a painful, useful reminder that Israel is not their vanity. It’s their safeguard.”

Every day of the week, every story involving immigration, or any story about any aspect of gentile identity, is a ‘painful reminder’.

Virtually every thing in existence is a ‘painful reminder’.

And remember: “The last Jew to leave Europe should spit.”

New Yorker: “How American Racism Influenced Hitler”

Of course. It won’t stop until every single white person in America is silenced, displaced, or bred out of existence. We must never forget: Every white baby is a potential Hitler.

In The New Yorker, Alex Ross writes on “How American Racism Influenced Hitler”. There are astonishing ad hominems in this piece:

Yet an eerie continuity became visible in the postwar years, as German scientists were imported to America and began working for their former enemies; the resulting technologies of mass destruction exceeded Hitler’s darkest imaginings. The Nazis idolized many aspects of American society: the cult of sport, Hollywood production values, the mythology of the frontier… In 1928, Hitler remarked, approvingly, that white settlers in America had “gunned down the millions of redskins to a few hundred thousand.” When he spoke of Lebensraum, the German drive for “living space” in Eastern Europe, he often had America in mind.

Or this bizarre passage:

The Nazis were not wrong to cite American precedents. Enslavement of African-Americans was written into the U.S. Constitution. Thomas Jefferson spoke of the need to “eliminate” or “extirpate” Native Americans. In 1856, an Oregonian settler wrote, “Extermination, however unchristianlike it may appear, seems to be the only resort left for the protection of life and property.” General Philip Sheridan spoke of “annihilation, obliteration, and complete destruction.”

America’s knack for maintaining an air of robust innocence in the wake of mass death struck Hitler as an example to be emulated. He made frequent mention of the American West in the early months of the Soviet invasion. The Volga would be “our Mississippi,” he said. “Europe—and not America—will be the land of unlimited possibilities.” Poland, Belarus, and Ukraine would be populated by pioneer farmer-soldier families. Autobahns would cut through fields of grain. The present occupants of those lands—tens of millions of them—would be starved to death.

Ross then undercuts the above implications with this:

At the same time, and with no sense of contradiction, the Nazis partook of a long-standing German romanticization of Native Americans. One of Goebbels’s less propitious schemes was to confer honorary Aryan status on Native American tribes, in the hope that they would rise up against their oppressors.

… before immediately moving right back to Point A with a laundry list of ad hominems against America:

Jim Crow laws in the American South served as a precedent in a stricter legal sense. Scholars have long been aware that Hitler’s regime expressed admiration for American race law…

California’s sterilization program directly inspired the Nazi sterilization law of 1934..

In 1924, the first execution by gas chamber took place, in Nevada. In a history of the American gas chamber, Scott Christianson states that the fumigating agent Zyklon-B, which was licensed to American Cyanamid by the German company I. G. Farben, was considered as a lethal agent but found to be impractical. Zyklon-B was, however, used to disinfect immigrants as they crossed the border at El Paso—a practice that did not go unnoticed by Gerhard Peters, the chemist who supplied a modified version of Zyklon-B to Auschwitz. Later, American gas chambers were outfitted with a chute down which poison pellets were dropped. Earl Liston, the inventor of the device, explained, “Pulling a lever to kill a man is hard work. Pouring acid down a tube is easier on the nerves, more like watering flowers.” Much the same method was introduced at Auschwitz, to relieve stress on S.S. guards.

Perhaps the most evil parallel between American history and Nazism is that both at one time had actual policies of immigration restriction:

When Hitler praised American restrictions on naturalization, he had in mind the Immigration Act of 1924, which imposed national quotas and barred most Asian people altogether. For Nazi observers, this was evidence that America was evolving in the right direction, despite its specious rhetoric about equality. The Immigration Act, too, played a facilitating role in the Holocaust, because the quotas prevented thousands of Jews, including Anne Frank and her family, from reaching America. In 1938, President Roosevelt called for an international conference on the plight of European refugees; this was held in Évian-les-Bains, France, but no substantive change resulted. The German Foreign Office, in a sardonic reply, found it “astounding” that other countries would decry Germany’s treatment of Jews and then decline to admit them.

If you haven’t figured it out by now, America is clearly just like Hitler… no, America is literally Hitler.

The distortions of Ross’ mind are perhaps most glaring in the following, rather striking passage, where a single passing sentence reflecting the true reality of America’s role in WWII (the only reference in the entire piece to this quite important dimension) is nonetheless offset with a “Still”:

Hundreds of thousands of Americans died fighting Nazi Germany. Still, bigotry toward Jews persisted, even toward Holocaust survivors.

Let those two last sentences sink in. At this point in reading the essay, I began to worry about Ross’ state of mind.

There is, of course, the obligatory Trump/Hitler association which comes in the form of a very odd passage:

In our current age of unapologetic racism and resurgent authoritarianism, the mechanics of Hitler’s rise are a particularly pressing matter. For dismantlers of democracy, there is no better exemplar…

In 1990, Vanity Fair reported that Donald Trump once kept a book of Hitler’s speeches by his bed. When Trump was asked about it, he said, “If I had these speeches, and I am not saying that I do, I would never read them.” Since Trump entered politics, he has repeatedly been compared to Hitler, not least by neo-Nazis. Although some resemblances can be found—at times, Trump appears to be emulating Hitler’s strategy of cultivating rivalries among those under him, and his rallies are cathartic rituals of racism, xenophobia, and self-regard—the differences are obvious and stark. For one thing, Hitler had more discipline. What is worth pondering is how a demagogue of Hitler’s malign skill might more effectively exploit flaws in American democracy.

The ominous closing paragraph of Ross’ piece is a striking example of Jewish paranoia, with the standard literary-pretensions (“It was a dark and stormy night”) of liberal propaganda, hit pieces on the New Right. In this case, we have Baby Hitler depicted as, presumably, an adolescent Alt Right kid meming on 4Chan:

The artist-politician of the future will not bask in the antique aura of Wagner and Nietzsche. He is more likely to take inspiration from the newly minted myths of popular culture. The archetype of the ordinary kid who discovers that he has extraordinary powers is a familiar one from comic books and superhero movies, which play on the adolescent feeling that something is profoundly wrong with the world and that a magic weapon might banish the spell. With one stroke, the inconspicuous outsider assumes a position of supremacy, on a battlefield of pure good against pure evil. For most people, such stories remain fantasy, a means of embellishing everyday life. One day, though, a ruthless dreamer, a loner who has a “vague notion of being reserved for something else,” may attempt to turn metaphor into reality. He might be out there now, cloaked by the blue light of a computer screen, ready, waiting.

The sheer number of books about Hitler that Ross appears to have read, and his apparent need to shoehorn them all into a rambling and nearly incoherent article, perhaps reveals more about Ross’ own fragile state of mind than anything else.

One gets the sense that, among liberal, NYC-based, Jewish writers, the wheels are coming off the rails, the carriages increasingly unhinged.
